Visual Studio 2013 likes to go online every so often to validate that it’s being used by a licensed user. That’s all well and good, but what if that user is working in a permanently offline environment?

Fear not. As an MSDN subscriber, you can download a “static” activation key to use. Here are the steps:

• Go to http://msdn.microsoft.com from a computer that has internet access.
• Click on “MSDN Subscriptions” link toward the top right.
• Sign into MSDN with a valid MSDN subscriber account (Microsoft Account, formerly Live ID)
• Click on “My Product Keys”

• Scroll down to the VS 2013 edition you have installed. You should see the term “Static Activation Key.” That is the key you need to enter into Visual Studio to turn off the internet activation check (which normally runs every 30 days).

Make a note of that key, and head over to your offline computer.

• Launch Visual Studio 2013
• Go to Help->Register Product

• Click on “License with a Product Key”

• Enter the static key you noted from MSDN.

• Click Apply, and you should be set!

I am an MSDN subscriber user, my Viusal Studio 2013 with update 2 was working perfectly. Today I installed update 3, when I restart Visual Studio, it asks me license key:

Activate Windows

Goto http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/ or what ever the msdn link is for your country. Click on Subscription Access and log into your account. You then need to go to My Product Keys to get your product key. It most likely is a static key that has not changed from the initial release, that is the way it is for my subscription. You may also want to read the text associated with the entry for me it states.

The product key is not embedded with Visual Studio 2013. When you launch the product, you can simply sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your MSDN subscription and your IDE will automatically activate. An added benefit of signing in to Visual Studio is that your IDE settings will sync across devices, and you can connect to online developer services. If you’d rather enter a product key, then simply bypass signing in and enter the product key found here by selecting Register Product under the Help menu.
